After school on February 12th the last HELLO Village event,
the Valentine’s Day Party was held. A large number of students
showed up early and they were eager to enjoy the event. Before
the main event started, there were snacks which included chips
and a small cake prepared by the staff at HELLO Village, as well as booths which involved English-related games, activities, and even a chance at winning a lottery prize.
First, students were fascinated by a presentation on the history of Saint Valentine’s Day. They were surprised to learn that the
tradition, which most Japanese people believe is about giving
chocolates, originally did not involve chocolate at all. More
importantly, they discovered new cultural knowledge they could
later share with their peers.
Next, students learned new vocabulary terms through a quiz about love-related idioms and were excited to learn new ways to express themselves. For example, one popular idiom, “the bee’s knees”
means “someone who is attractive.” Next, everyone had a blast
with a lively game of "Pass the Balloon," where students could only use their elbows to pass the balloon down a line—it was hilarious
to watch! This activity was followed by a "Valentine’s Dance,"
which was a take on musical chairs where students had to discuss certain topics such as “what is your favorite love story” in English
to keep the fun going.
In the last part of this event, students were excited to see the
results of the “Lovebird Lottery,” where students who were able to stay for the whole event wrote their names on slips of paper. The winners were randomly drawn by an ALT who represented
St. Valentine. Two students won several large snack bags and
kindly shared their prizes and the spirit of Valentine’s Day with
their friends. Even after the event wrapped up, students stayed in HELLO Village, chatting enthusiastically with their friends and ALTs while polishing off the last of the treats.
